There’s a bunch of Mom’s Night Out-type events around town this month (October) - see the items highlighted below - so stick a pizza in the microwave for your Sig-O, grab a girlfriend and hit the town. Just out of curiosity - if you were planning a night out with your girlfriends/playgroup/etc, what is the biggest draw for you - cocktails, food, fun (movie, shopping or other activity?) or just a good old fashioned gabfest? For us, cocktails are a high priority - and the better the booze (champagne, top-shelf margaritas) the better the party, we say. Dressing up is also a draw, as we rarely get out of sweats anymore - fashion show or charitable event maybe? The most appealing part of a night out is the idea of having someone else organize it all so all you have to do is show up, which is why the events below are so appealing. Send us your thoughts for a fab night out - we’ll incorporate them into a RT GNO (that’s Red Tricycle Girls’ Night Out).

You’ve heard it before. Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. If you’re rethinking your current shopping habits, it’s never been easier for eco-savvy Seattle & Eastside mamas to shop for great deals on gently-used clothes. From thrift shops for die-hard bargain hunters (Value Village and Goodwill) to the vintage racks at neighborhood shops (Retroactive Kids and Pop Tots) there are loads of options for the eco (and price) conscious shopper.

One of the best ways to clean up and clean house is through the bevy of beautiful consignment stores that have cropped up around town. Most of the items sold in these modern boutiques are in such pristine condition, you’d never believe you were shopping for second-hand goods. Following are our picks for the best consignment stores for maternity, baby and children’s clothes.

Bonus: Bring your closet full of clothing, toys and gear and pay it forward (and earn some $$ to boot).
Tip: The policies differ from store to store, so it’s a good idea to call before bringing your goods in.

Bootyland
www.bootylandkids.com
This Capitol Hill alternative kiddie boutique takes green living seriously. In addition to the generous selection of gently-used toys and clothing, shoppers can find new organic clothing lines (eight3one, Kate Quinn Organics), hemp and naturally made goods, nursing gear, baby wraps and significant space dedicated their collection of wooden toys.

Buggy
Beacon Hill
This hip Beacon Hill boutique offers quality items at affordable prices in a stylish, un-cluttered space. A nice mix of gently-used items and new accessories including shoes from Livie & Luca, onesies from Nest and eight3one, and “Flower Children Handknits,” hand-knit sweaters that have been rescued and refreshed (many are embellished or have wonderful new buttons). Don’t miss the onesie bucket, where everything is priced from $3.00 to $10.00. Buggy is ultra family-friendly, with a play area complete with a couch, toys, and lots of books to keep Little One busy.

Store owner Nyro Murphy is now receiving appointments to bring in gently-used maternity clothes. The clothes must be beautiful, in near-perfect condition, and something that is not currently being sold new in the store (they do not have to be clothes originally purchased from Bump). Please call ahead.

Cruzin’ Kidz Boutique & Consignment
This Woodinville resale store is well-organized and the clothes are in nearly-new condition. Even the itty-bitty baby hats are neatly displayed on individual hangers. Among the resale items, we spied a nice supply of Gymboree, Hanna Andersson (after all this is HA territory with the outlet right up the street), and Baby Lulu too. On any given day, you may also find gently used “gear” (the big stuff), toys, books, monitors, and more. Also check out the brand new offerings from BabyLegs, Bobux shoes and the most requested baby carrier in town, the Ergo. Cruzin’ Kidz also sells custom children’s furniture by a local designer - everything from step stools to custom play kitchens.
Seattle, WA 98105
This is not truly a “consignment” store but a re-sale store; they buy your goods outright and then resell them. Nestled in this small strip mall, you’ll find high end clothing (think Hanna, Henri and Flora, Boden, boutique), shoes, and gear (strollers, bedding, furniture, some toys). Maternity clothing also sold. Most toys are organic or wooden. They also sell handmade apron dresses, bibs, and other local wares as well as Hanky Panky panties (new) for a steal.

The newsletter and subsequent hoopla regarding the baby high heels made us think about gifts we’ve received for our kiddos that we just don’t like or flat-out despise. One of comments about the shoes from an RT reader was “It’d be at the back of the closet never to be seen again.” We get that.

The high heels didn’t hit us with much fury but there are several gifts that are actually in our house (some in use) that make us seethe. Most, we’re embarrassed to admit, have come from family. Funny how, when the baby was born, we wished we lived closer to family, but once they started sending gifts (and we had a few ill-fated vacations together) it became evident that 3,000 miles was just the right distance.

Here are suggestions for items that make bad baby gifts, culled from our own personal inventory. These are not hard and fast rules and it’s not to say you can’t buy any of these for your own kid, but if you’re angling for the role of “favorite aunt or uncle” or want to be invited to the next birthday party, it’s best to steer clear of these items so as not stoke the flames of resentment.

Here’s a photo of a t-shirt our kid received this Christmas. As you can see, it subtly screams, “Multi-Billion Dollar Movie Merchandising.” Nice. (again, if you love Winnie-the-pooh or Tinkerbell, feel free to indulge your passions with your own child. Just don’t expect others to share your enthusiasm). What you don’t get from the photo is that is has crazy red flashing lights that don’t turn off. Ever. This poor tot is a walking slot machine/billboard. We’re not sure if it will short-circuit in the rain. As an added feature, it’s made out of a tupperware-like substance most certainly chock-full of bisphenol-A. Just what you want rubbing up against a precious little body. The takeaway:
Bad Baby Gift #1: Anything with characters from TV shows or Disney films.
#2: Anything that flashes or makes noise that doesn’t have an off switch.
#3: Anything that could electrocute a child.
#4: Anything that contains BPA

Here’s a photo of a Hess Monster Truck our son also received this past Christmas (needless to say, much eggnog was consumed that day). This thoughtful gift offers a one-two punch for growing little minds: it will not only build a life-long adoration for large, loud, gas-guzzling motorized vehicles, but through strategically-placed logos, it also fosters an appreciation for the oil companies that are their (our) lifeblood.
Bad Baby Gift #5: Anything with a logo. A gasoline, political or religious logo may limit your visitation rights until child turns 18.

When mom sent a bunch of our old toys for our little guy to play with, we couldn’t help but feel a wave of nostalgia for the beloved Mayor McCheese and crew — we adored McDonalds as a kid. Our family went every Friday for a Filet-o-Fish sandwich (the Catholic no-meat-on-Friday thing). But given today’s rising obesity rates and lack of physical activity in school, letting a kid play with a toy cheeseburger is just wrong.
Bad Baby Gift #6: Anything related to fast food. This includes McDonald’s gift certificates (does anyone remember getting those as a kid?) and free Happy Meal tchotchkes (see item #1).

Each Christmas, our mother would give the girls in the family a Collector Edition Barbie but wouldn’t let us take them out of the box. So basically, she let us look at these magnificent dolls, then shuffled them off to some undisclosed storage facility, never to be seen again. It was no surprise then, when our son was born that she sent this Timeless Collection GI Joe, who arrived with a missile launcher and hand grenades. Though we confiscated the weapons, we did ripped open the box to let our son have at the action figure (saving thousands of dollars in therapy).
Bad Baby Gift #7: Anything “weapons” related. This includes toy guns.
Bad Baby Gift #8: Toys that children are not actually allowed to play with.

Of course, our kids are madly in love with every item featured so we haven’t found a way to dispose of them yet. But we have gotten smarter about screening baby gifts.

Come on, you know you have a few crummy baby gifts you’ve either received or perhaps even given yourself (before you had your own kids, of course). Spill the beans and tell us about your most despised.

In Tuesday’s newsletter, we told you about a company founded by two Seattle moms called Heelarious. The concept: fun, fake high heels for babies 0 - six months old. Obviously, with the company’s name and product description, they don’t take their concept too seriously.

But on various message boards across the blogosphere, the feedback has been less than positive about this frivolous gift. One RT reader was horrified that we’d recommend these, “Um seriously? The sexualization of our daughters is so pervasive these days, I think maybe people don’t even realize how this product really isn’t clever or funny. They don’t seem too different from the horrible thong underwear marketed to 7 year olds by Abercrombie and Fitch or the appalling idea of making Pussycat Dolls for the preschool set. And I thought targeting preschoolers was surprising, now it’s babies!”

We feel this product falls into the gag gift category (i.e. “boob man” t-shirts, or the “diva” onsie) — gimmicky, but essentially harmless entertainment primarily designed for sleep-deprived moms (those first six months aren’t always fun and games) rather than kids.

Full disclosure: Our kids are of the male variety so perhaps we’ve been naive to the sexploitation of little girls.

What say you, Seattle parents, of baby high heels? Silly shower gift or Britney Spears-inspiring insanity?

Yep, we’re dating ourselves, but in searching for the perfect gift for Father’s Day, we were reminded of one of our favorite all time gifts to give: The Mix Tape.

Before CD burners and playlists, mixed cassette tapes were a staple of our adolescence, cherished reminders of a mega party, a summer love, or a road trip. Prized not only for their cool song compilations, but the labor-intensive process (Stop. Rewind. Pause.) and inventive packaging (Cover Art? Check. Hand scribbled notes? Check.), a good mix tape is a little bit luck, a whole lot of work, and a big dish of love, thus the perfect ode to parenthood.

Whether you want to dig out your boombox and go totally old school, burn a CD, or make a big splash with a new iphone booted with a personal playlist, we’ve come up with a few songs about parenthood that will surely bring a tear to dear old dad’s eye (he always was a softy). For additional inspiration, we’ve tapped a few local music gurus (who happen to be dads) for their top parenting playlists. Feel free to add your own to the mix.

Wallingford and Phinney Ridge have emerged as family-friendly ‘hoods in the heart of Seattle. The amount of outdoor activities, food, shopping makes each a perfect destination for exploration. Wallingford is full of good eats, parks, and has a bustling urban feel that makes it such a desirable neighborhood for families. Phinney Ridge sits atop the hill over-looking Ballard, nestled next to the Woodland Park zoo, and bordered on the north and south by Greenwood and Fremont. With the new infusion of children’s stores with some old standbys, Phinney should not be missed. With the arrival of urban play space playmatters, 65th and Phinney is a must-stop destination for shopping and socializing. On a sunny day, you’ll find all the locals out and about in this friendly ‘hood. We’ve conveniently broken down our picks by category: Eat, Play, Shop.

SHOP:

Alphabet Soup
1406 N 45th Street
Pining for some new books but don’t want to spend retail? Check out Alphabet Soup. They have gently used books as well as new books for sale. We love the retro Dick and Jane titles and other vintage classics.

Wallingford Center
1815 N 45th St.
Seattle, WA 98103
206.517.7773
www.wallingfordcenter.com
Wallingford Center has been a revolving door for many storefronts over the years, but now has several destination businesses to anchor the old neighborhood school house, creating a community meeting place feel once again. Some of our faves include Pharmaca, the hip, modern pharmacy that offers traditional medications plus homeopathic treatments. We love their selection of California Baby products as well as other natural baby products, and Trophy Cakes. We’re always hankering for a great cupcake. This place delivers the goods. We find ourselves making excuses to go to Wallingford just for the cupcakes. With choices like Hummingbird and Triple Coconut, you can’t go wrong here. Minis are the perfect size for junior. Bonus: they do birthdays (order in advance)

Metropolis
7220 Greenwood Ave N
Seattle, WA 98103
(206) 782-7002
Kids in the ‘hood call this the “sticker store”. Lots of great stickers, cards, balloons, gag gifts, and recently they started selling furniture.

Rising Stars
7404 Greenwood Avenue North
Seattle, WA 98103
206 781 0138
www.rising-stars.biz
This children’s consignment store houses an impressive variety of everything kiddo. They sell many new items (See Kai Run, children’s books, an adorable pot and pan set, blankets, Moby Wraps, etc) and a large variety of gently used clothing for kids.

Labels
7212 Greenwood Ave N
Seattle, WA 98103
(206) 781-1194
Excellent consignment store selling women’s, children’s, and maternity. Very small space and can get crowded on the weekends, but a fun place to shop for great bargains. Usually high quality used clothing and shoes. Be prepared to get addicted to this store.

Lemon Meringue
7720 Greenwood Ave, North Suite #101
Seattle, WA 98103
206 297-6071
www.lemonmeringue.us
This boutique carries clothes for mom, preggo, and babes. An RT favorite.

Honorable Mentions:

Frock Shop
www.shopfrockshop.com

Hip Zephyr
www.hipzephyr.com

PLAY:

Woodland Park Zoo & Rose Garden
750 N 50th St.
www.zoo.org (sweet URL!)
Rain or shine this zoo has it all: indoor and outdoor exhibits, different environments (Tundra to Tropical Forests), and a carousel. The newest addition (until the penguin exhibit is completed), Zoomazium, offers mom or dad a chance to sit for a few minutes while junior runs, charges, and slides his or her way around this exploration room. The kids classes are wildly popular and fill up quickly. In addition, the Zoo Tunes summer concert series is a fab event (tickets went on sale at Metropolitan Markets May 5, 2008) for the whole family.

The rose garden next to the zoo is free of charge and offers a beautiful glimpse of many different types of roses. The fountains are a great form of entertainment for kids too.

Phinney Ridge Neighborhood Association
6532 Phinney Ave. N
Seattle WA 98103
(206) 783-2244
Depending on the time of year the Phinney Neighborhood Center has different activities that are either geared specifically to kids, like the Ridge Romp, or are very family friendly. We also like the Holiday Craft Fair in early December, which includes different performances ( of varying skill levels). Last year included Polynesian, Celtic, and a sword dance that brought some new culture to town. There are also numerous other activities detailed out on their website.
www.phinneycenter.org

Play Matters
www.playmattersseattle.com
A brand new place near 76th and Greenwood, next door to Lemon Meringue for the under-5 set and their parents or care-givers to play and network. An RT Favorite.

Seattle Holistic Center
4649 Sunnyside Ave. N., Room 302
In the Good Shepard Center
(206) 525-9035
www.seattleholisticcenter.com
Housed in the Good Shepard Center, Collette Crawford leads an array of prenatal and post-natal yoga and parenting classes. Once a month, Lorraine Bayes from the Tickle Toon Typhoon graces the Mother’s Groove class for an hour of music with your baby. Additionally, toddler classes, labor preparation classes, and other classes are offered.

Honorable Mentions:

Gasworks Park
2101 N Northlake Way
There are hills to fly kites from, a child’s play barn, and a sun dial atop the hill. This park is a great way to spend a sunny or windy day in Seattle. Bring a picnic lunch. Better yet-ride your bike via the Burke-Gilman trail with your picnic and kiddos in tow! Be sure to hit the 4th of July fireworks at least once (the strawberry shortcake alone is worth it).

Meridian Playfield
4649 Sunnyside Ave. N
This park sits on the North side of the Good Shepard Center. The playground is wonderful for kids of all ages. The water spigot that makes a river is a huge hit. There is plenty of room for sack races, soccer, or Frisbee. Picnic benches, BBQ’s, and facilities make this a great family stop.

Wallingford Playfield
4219 Wallingford Ave. N
www.seattle.gov
Wading pool parks are THE place to spend a hot day in Seattle. This park has one and an age appropriate, splinter-free playground to boot! What’s not to love?

EAT:

Tutta Bella
4411 Stone Way North
www.tuttabella.com
Tutta Bella offers a simple, yet delicious menu of Napolitano pizzas. The restaurant is loud, often has a wait (although it goes surprisingly fast), offers live music many nights (with enough space for the kids to dance –hello grown-up conversation!), and is filled with families. The kids are given a small sample of pizza dough and wikki sticks to keep them busy while waiting for their bambini pizza. Delicious gelato awaits after your meal.

Olympia Pizza II
4501 Interlake Ave N.
Seattle, WA 98103
206-633-3655
www.olypizza.net

The original Olympia Pizza sits atop Queen Anne hill. Unlike most sequels, this pizza house is not lacking in substance. Very family friendly. They also deliver.

Red Mill Burgers
312 North 67th St
(206) 783-6362
www.redmillburgers.com
What can we say, except great burgers! Saturday and Sunday lunch times, especially on nice days, are really crowded. Lots of families sitting outside and a decent number of high chairs. These burgers are named the best in the city year after year. The line out the door is not only an indication of that, but a resounding nod to get in line.

Mae’s Phinney Ridge Cafe
65th and Phinney
Seattle, WA 98103
(206) 782-1222
www.maescafe.com
Near 65th and Phinney
This is a very popular cafe for breakfast. If you don’t get there early expect to have to wait. Great food in large quantities. The busiest appears to be about 10am when people start to wake up from a fun previous night. Although food is only served until 3pm, in the summer they sell ice cream until dusk.

Honorable Mention:

Zeeks Pizza
www.zeekspizza.com
Very kid friendly. Nice deck in the summer when the weather is warm.

Diva Espresso
www.divaespresso.com
On the corner of 80th & Greenwood. The locals swear they have the very best latte’s in Seattle. Sounds like a challenge!

The Phinney Farmer’s Market
www.seattlefarmersmarkets.org/markets/phinney
This is the newest farmer’s market to hit Seattle.

Other/Misc

Lil Klippers
www.lilklippers.com
Looking for a kid-friendly clipper? Lil Klippers gets the job done. They have experience with tiny kids, place them in wooden, hand-made chairs, and give them a toy to occupy them while they get trimmed. First timers get a memento card with a lock of hair! Added bonus? Mom or dad can reward the child (and themselves!) with a cupcake next door after the whole affair is over.

Beachcombers Kids
www.beachcomberkidscuts.com
Near 65th and Phinney.
Children wary about haircuts are soothed by being able to watch his or her favorite movie while getting her haircut. It is small place and difficult to get appointments unless you plan ahead. Starting in June, they’ll offer drop-off child care on Fridays.

This weather has left us hankering for something cold and creamy. Ice Cream. Nothing beats it on a hot day. Especially when you can enjoy it outside. Craving something a bit trendier healthier? Frozen Yogurt is where it’s at these days. It’s low (or non) fat, healthy (assuming you lay off the coco puffs), and filling. Gwenyth is doing it. Perez is doing it. Go ahead, go Hollywood.
Scoop Du Jour
4029 E Madison St
Seattle, WA, 98112
(206) 325-9562
Right in the heart of Madison Park, you can grab a scoop of delicious ice cream on a waffle cone and walk down to the park or waterfront. This is a Seattle tradition. Don’t miss out on their famous burgers or grilled cheese either. This is the real deal.

Husky Deli
4721 California Avenue SW
Seattle, WA 98116
(206) 937-2810
www.huskydeli.com
This West Seattle icon is where everyone heads for their ice cream. You can make a West Seattle day-trip with this joint. Pick up a few sandwiches, drinks, and don’t forget the candy. Head to Alki and voila! Perfect day.

Bottega Italiana
Wishing you were in Italy? This is where you can get your gelato fix. The ingredients are fresh and creative. They even serve ice cream that is vegan and non-dairy. With 60% less fat than ice cream, it sounds like the perfect time to head here. Grazi!

Seattle Frozen Yogurt:

Crazy Cherry
www.crazy-berry.com

Nestled on Capital Hill’s broadway near Dick’s burgers, this is the LA-scene “Pink-berry” knock-off had to change its name to Crazy Cherry (from berry). A major fan favorite for fro-yo. They use Nancy’s and Sunshine dairy products. Fresh fruit as well as fun dried goods can be sprinkled on top to make this the perfect treat. Flavors are strawberry, green tea, and plain. They have a monthly 4th selection as well (currently mocha). They’re opening stores in Bellevue, Issaquah, and Greenlake.

MooBerry
2019 NW Market St
Seattle, WA 98107
(206) 706-4842
In the heart of Ballard, you can get your frozen yogurt fix in this new store to get in on the fro-yo trend. Grab a tangy treat and head to Me N Momz for some resale therapy, or head to the Ballard Locks or Golden Gardens to enjoy your treat outdoors.

Eastside Ice Cream:

Theno’s Dairy (aka Vivian’s Pride)
12248 156th Ave. NE
Redmond, WA 98052-2041
Phone: (425) 885-2339
Near the South 47 Farm in Redmond, Theno’s Dairy has been a main-stay since the 1940’s. The ice cream is fresh and made from local cows. Go for a scoop or grab a pint of hand-packed ice cream to enjoy at home. Really groovy and unique flavors. They sell milk and cheese too. Kiddos love to sit on the big cow out front.

Snoqualmie Gourmet Ice Cream
21106 86th
Ave SE
Maltby, WA
(360) 668-8535
www.snoqualmiegourmet.com
This ice-creamery is a bit of a drive for Seattle, however it’s worth it! This establishment makes sorbet, ice cream, and frozen custard (our favorite is the lemon custard). In addition, they host parties. This is a perfect way to end a trip to Flower World, or even Woodinville. You can also buy pints at some local markets (Metropolitan Market) if Maltby isn’t on your “to-do” list this week.

Ben and Jerry’s
176 Lake St S
Kirkland, WA, 98033
(425) 576-1609
Now that B&J’s has left U-village, you’ll have to get your fix from this Kirkland establishment. A short walk to a few different waterfront access points, it’s the perfect treat to enjoy on Lake Washington.

Eastside Frozen Yogurt:

Ce Fiore
111 Lake St S
Kirkland, WA 98033
www.cefiore.com
Ce Fiore is one of two fro-yo stores in Kirkland. The atmosphere is clean and comfortable. The flat panel screen displays the flavors, prices, and toppings. Green Tea and Regular are always available. The other two flavors tend to change. The raspberry pomegranate is to die for with fresh strawberries and granola.

Schnoo
223 Kirkland Ave
This Fro-yo establishment has an almost cult-like following. You’re sure to run into a tweeny-bopper while waiting for your turn at Schnoo. The kids will enjoy the low, space-age seats in this clean and neutral environment. The toppings include healthy options (fruit, granola) as well as not-so-healthy options (chocolate chips, oreos, coco puffs, etc). They recently added a pomegranate flavor to their existing green tea and regular flavors.

Red Mango
Bellevue Square & Alderwood Mall
www.redmangousa.com
This pre-Pinkberry shop is the grandfather of all Frozen Yogurts. Look for stores in U-village, Pacific Place, and Southcenter malls soon. Creamy and delicious, you’ll feel better feeding your little one fro-yo over ice cream. This doesn’t have high fructose corn syrup, and is packed with good-for-your-gut probiotics.

Whether you’re looking forward to elbowing your way through an all-you-can eat buffet (hey, it’s your day after all), or long to explore healthier options, make the most of May 11 by reading up on the following Mom’s Day outings. We divided our picks (many of which came from RT readers) into easy-to-use categories (Chic Chow, Active Endeavors, Spa Ahh and Retail Therapy). Naturally, our favorite is the spa section, because nothing can top some well-deserved down time. Relish it while you can.
