“Near the forfront of the next generation of parenting tools...Red Tricycle is not your mother's parenting aide. Readers are razr-phone-toting, book-club-joining moms who at least know what a blackberry is."

Seattle Post Intelligencer April 2006

Thank you for being so smart, clever and witty! I’m enjoying my subscription and appreciate what you’re doing.

Your information reads like YOU are having fun and that’s worth a lot! Thanks for many good ideas.

about us

With 15 years of city magazine experience between the team, Red Tricycle, (call us 'RT'), knows how to hunt down those out-of-the-way shops and to find helpful local services and must-have products. We know who to talk to--the city's movers and shakers--in order to keep our pulse on what's hot and what's not for hip people who happen to be parents, too.

Jacqui Boland, Founder (Big Wheel)
Having worked for prestigious magazines in both New York and San Francisco, this native New Yorker now says she would gladly trade bagels for fresh Dungeness crab any day. Jacqui was most recently the national sales director for Where magazine and before that she helped launch a slew of magazines including Breathe, Luxury Homes for Reed Elsevier and Marin at Home for San Francisco magazine. She also worked in advertising sales for San Francisco magazine and Yoga Journal after starting her magazine career at Meredith Corporation. In her free time she enjoys chasing her son Jamie on his tricycle.

Kavita Varma-White, Seattle Editor
Kavita Varma-White recently moved about as far as you can move in the U.S. The exact mileage? 3,284.28 miles from sunny Fort Lauderdale to her new home in, well, not-so-sunny Bellevue. A journalist for 16 years, Kavita's work journey has paralleled her life's journey. She started as a single 20-something writing about pop culture at a Delaware newspaper. In her late 20s, as managing editor of Miami Metro magazine, she was engaged to be married and hip to the Miami nightlife scene. For the past nine years, as the mother of kids now 9 and 6, she covered parenting, health, and fitness as an assistant features editor at the Sun-Sentinel. Kavita is thrilled to explore her new environs and find out why everyone says Seattle is a great place to raise a family.

Sarah Bossenbroek, San Francisco Editor
An eight-year veteran of the Bay Area publishing industry, SarahBossenbroek's gigs with Metroview, The Bay Guardian, and seven years at San Francisco magazine have made her the "go-to" person among her friends for things to do, eat, see, and visit all across the Bay. Being a resource for friends is great, but now Red Tricycle gives her the chance to share her favorite kid-focused finds with a whole new audience-other new parents. She and her son Gus are always on the lookout for the cutest, coolest, most worthwhile happenings in San Francisco, Marin, and especially the East Bay, where they live and play.

Laura Rodde, Advertising Chief Pitch Mamma
A native Minnesotan, Laura's travels took her to San Francisco, Philadelphia, and France, before she settled in Seattle.Laura met Jacqui while running trails in Marin County, CA, before either knew a running stroller from a bassinet. Now fully steeped in finding a restaurant with the best crayons, the quickest way to make an "owie" go away in a crowded store and how to turn a rainy day into a great Seattle adventure, Laura has a passion for sharing her discoveries with other parents. Laura has spent her career helping companies focus on the needs of their clients, from Malt-O-Meal Cereal company, to Sony Playstation, The Industry Standard (internet news magazine) and most recently Horizon Air. Running after her two kids, Eleanor and Thomas, is now her primary exercise.

Christina Forte, Promotions and Strategic Partnerships
A native of So Cal, Christina earned her kid and mommy marketing cred working for companies like Mattel and Leapfrog. From there, it was an easy hop (or should we say leap?) into the San Francisco media world, executing city-wide events and promotions for San Francisco magazine, including the launch of the Best of the Bay Area party. At Red Tricycle, she marries her market and media savvy with grace while juggling two-year old twins, Sela and Rowan.

Angie Ballas, Writer
Angie is one of those rare being's we hear about sometimes..an actual Eastside native. Yep, she was born and raised in Bellevue, then traveled all the way across the big pond to the UW for college (Go Dawgs). After a four year stint in San Jose CA, where she worked in sales at the Santa Clara Convention Center and then as a wedding coordinator at the Hyatt St.Claire (unfortunately during the "Macarena" years), she returned to Washington and has since lived in Kirkland and Redmond. Angie enjoys exploring all the fun programs for kids on the Eastside with daughters Monica and Fiona (and she loves to tell everyone about her finds)! An avid Red Tricycle reader (and tipster) since day one, she is excited to now be part of the team.

Joia Poort, Writer
Joia has grown up all over the west coast: Alaska, Montana, California, and finally Washington. Joia teaches French, English, U.S. History, and a myriad of other classes in an eastside junior high. While attending UW (go dawgs), she spent one quarter living abroad in Poitiers, France and loves anything French (food, decor, travel, helping people plan their trips, etc). Her future goal is to open up a French preschool. She'd also love to lead tours to France (She's led 4 student trips to France). Her early jobs all involved children (nannying/babysitting). She's been married to her college sweetheart for almost 7 years and has two daughters. Her passions are travel, eating (does it sound better to say "tasting food"?), researching baby products, organizing, planning get-togethers, reading, and spending time with her family.
